O processo de aquisição do acervo em bibliotecas universitárias: o caso da biblioteca de Ciência e Tecnologia da UFJF

Abstract

University libraries play an important role within higher education institutions, since their main function is to gather and disseminate information. Based on this premise, this dissertation presents a management case that deals with the constitution of the collection of the Science and Technology Library, belonging to the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. More specifically, the process of acquisition of bibliographic material for said library is discussed. Due to the daily work, one can verify that the aforementioned library, although it has a considerable collection, presents some mismatches between the offer and the demand of books. On the one hand, much of the available works never left the shelves; on the other hand, there are books that do not reach the shelves because of the large amount of reserves. Based on this observation, the following question arises: How can the collection of the Science and Technology Library be optimized from the acquisition process of bibliographic material? Therefore, the main objective is to understand the process of acquisition of the collection, relating the actors involved, in order to, finally, propose ways to improve the purchase of bibliographic materials with the purpose of optimizing the use of the collection to better meet the demand of the academic community. From the methodological point of view, this is a qualitative investigation, based on both bibliographical research and empirical research, which includes on-site observations, collection of documentary data and photographic survey, and interview with an agent involved in the process acquisition of bibliographic material at UFJF. At the end, it is hoped, with the proposal of an Educational Action Plan, to contribute to the establishment of management strategies capable of perfecting the constitution of the Library of Science and Technology.
