Abstract

The presente work analyzes the role of the European Court of Human Rights, especially since the end of the Cold War. It does this through the appreciation of normative institutional documents, conventions, international judgments and constitutional charters of some of the so-called latecomers. It also takes into account the importance of the institution in defending the democratic rule of law, in maintaining the European concert of nations and especially in promoting the defense of human dignity and individual freedom. It considers some applications to the European Court of Human Rights available on the HUDOC database, while highlighting the structural changes suffered by the house in its more than 50 years of history. Finally, it highlights the challenges associated with the social construction of a European becoming that is as uncertain as it is present.
