Tratamento odontológico de pacientes com transtorno do espectro autista adultos sob anestesia geral – Revisão integrativa da literatura

Abstract

Objective: to systematically review the literature on dental treatment under general anesthesia in patients with non-collaborative adult ASD. Methodology: A literature review was performed in the PubMed databases with the terms (autism spectrum disorder) AND (adult) AND (dentistry) AND (general anesthesia). And in the VHL, the terms “adult autism” AND “dentistry” AND “general anesthesia” were used. Articles from the last ten years that contemplated the outcome of dental care under general anesthesia in adult patients with non-collaborative ASD were selected, after reading the abstracts. Results: Of the 11 eligible articles, 6 were used in this study. Most patients were male, with a mean age of 20 years. With multiple caries lesions and periodontal diseases, due to decreased salivary flow, constant use of systemic drugs, a diet rich in cariogenic foods and lack of knowledge of those responsible for oral hygiene care. Due to the high threshold of stress and agitation, they have bruxism, tongue and lip injuries. Because they seek dental care when they have extreme pain, they often need extractions. The control agitated, uncooperative behavior and give more comfort to the patient, dentists for to dental treatment under general anesthesia. Conclusion: when adult autistic patients are uncooperative and have poor oral health, an alternative management to treat them is under general anesthesia. Thus, all dental procedures are performed in a single session.
