Abstract

The mission of the Assembly of God, which began in the state of Pará, later spread throughout the country, and is currently the largest Pentecostal movement in Brazil, with important influence on the social, religious and political context of the country. It is in this context that the congregational missionary work begins by carrying out proselytism and seeking new adherents and who are disseminators of the Pentecostal message. Samuel Nyström and Lina Nyström were the first couple of missionaries sent to a mission in Brazil by the Philadelphia Church. Both arrived in Bethlehem in Pará in 1916, becoming missionaries of Daniel Berg, Gunnar Vingren and Otto Nelson. Thus, a link was established between the history of the Assembly of God and the Swedish Mission, and this mission left important marks in the history of the development of its identity. The couple dedicated themselves to learning the Portuguese language and began their work in the region of Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Rio de Janeiro. Nyström, besides being a missionary, has assumed the position of president of the General Convention of the Assemblies of God in Brazil nine times; Through his work he was able to raise important financial contributions to the structuring of the churches. Silas Malafaia had its history marked by a long period with religious experiences, since Malafaia started very early in this scenario, passing childhood, adolescence and youth under strong influence of his father Gilberto Malafaia who acted as pastor. Malafaia claims that his father and father-in-law José Santos were the two people who were ministerial references for him, referring to them as the two great schools of life.
