Religião, cinema e contracultura – a dimensão existencial nas comunidades alternativas sob as lentes cinematográficas

Abstract

This research aims at to investigate the relationship between art and religion from some thoughts proposed by Paul Tillich. We want to provide a better understanding the possibilities of definition and manifestation of religion in our context. The counterculture is a historical moment for an analysis of the human being in contemporary times, and the movies are an important part of our cultural production and the manifestation of human spirituality, an expression of the Unconditioned that presents itself as culture, culture as the substance of religion. We intend to demonstrate that behind the libertarian ideas of this youth movement lies a deep spiritual base. The hippie movement had been valued in the construction of narratives, as in the representation of the alternative ideal and community life, as young people no longer wanted to be identified with traditional values, both in the social and institutional religious spheres. We have adopted a broader idea of religion beyond the institutional definitions, in order to better analyse the chosen films and understand their proximity to religious sentiment, manifest in the interaction between their characters, in the constructions and subversions of worlds created by cinema, as well as by religion. The movies are able of creating worlds, or destabilizing them through their language, in a way that these creations can lead us to reflections on our existence outside the screens, given the existential meaning questioned by art
