Tratamento periodontal em pacientes com síndrome de down: revisão de literatura

Abstract

The aim of this literature review was to discuss the different forms of Periodontal Therapy for patients with Down Syndrome. The descriptors “periodontal syndrome AND down syndrome” were used in the electronic search performed in the PubMed database. About 85 articles were found. 19 literature review, systematic review and/or meta-analysis articles were excluded from the present study. Another 57 articles were excluded after analysis of titles and abstracts. Nine scientific articles were selected for this review. The results showed that it is a great challenge for dentists to treat periodontal disease in individuals with Down Syndrome, as they have poor bacterial plaque control. The predominant technique used in these patients is conventional periodontal treatment (scaling and root planing), however, other adjuvants are being seen as a way to facilitate biofilm control. The plaque developer (erythrosine) proved to be a great ally to facilitate cleaning, in addition, chlorhexidine proved to be effective in reducing gingival inflammation. The selected articles were viewed in chronological order, and with that, the advancement of periodontal therapies was heard, both in the development of new techniques and in the best regimen for bacterial plaque control.
