Abstract

The vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is crucial in restorative dentistry, impacting the esthetics, function, and health of the stomatognathic system. This study reviews the indications for VDO augmentation, its fundamental concepts, and advances in restorative materials and techniques. VDO augmentation is indicated to harmonize dentofacial esthetics, create space for restorations, and improve occlusal relationships. In patients with severe tooth wear, VDO modification can restore esthetic appearance and provide space for restorative materials. This is beneficial for patients with temporomandibular dysfunction, improving the distribution of masticatory forces. VDO is a dynamic dimension, adjustable within a zone of physiological tolerance, determined by facial proportions, physiological rest position, phonetics, and cephalometric analyses. Historically, VDO has been determined by visual, functional, and phonetic methods.
