“Tragam-me uma camisa verde”: fascismos, integralismo e a indumentária

Abstract

The way members of the Ação Integralista Brasileira (AIB) presented themselves to the world was through their green shirts and the designation Camisas-verdes. Representing and symbolizing the ideals of the integralists, this uniformed attire was an important aesthetic, propagandistic, and mobilizing tool, fostering engagement and adherence to Plínio Salgado's nationalist project, which spread throughout Brazil in the 1930s. In alignment with the so-called shirt movements, the Camisas-verdes saw themselves as part of a transnational phenomenon that shared not only ideas but also practices. Based on these issues, the research aims to investigate the green shirts, the official integralista uniform, seeking to understand it as a moral, doctrinal, and revolutionary instrument, examining how men, women, and children were dressed to externalize the movement's principles – order and discipline, as well as God, homeland, and family. Furthermore, the study intends to analyze the uniform from the perspective of transnational fascism and fascist aesthetics, essential tools for considering the visual, ritualistic, and ideological expressions of integralismo.
