Entre as canetas: a figura do treinador de futebol brasileiro nas primeiras Copas do Mundo (1930-1970)

Abstract

This work aims to show how the Brazilian team's football coaches were portrayed in the first World Cups (1930/1970) in the pages of the newspaper O Globo. Using content analysis by Bardin (2011), the work categorizes mentions of coaches into positive, neutral and negative, as a way of helping to understand how the figure of these coaches is formed in the popular imagination. The objective is to identify whether over time there is an evolution in the mention of coaches, whether in the number of times they appear in the newspapers or in the way they are described in reports in the Rio newspaper. To make the analysis more concise, the eve and post-premiere editions were analyzed, in addition to the editions from the day before and the day after the Brazilian team's last match in the World Cups. The work shows that the image of the coach changes over the 40 years, but without transforming them into protagonists of the game, a role that continued to belong to the players.
