Entre teoria e prática: desafios da escultura no espaço público

Abstract

The thesis presents an account of the research and working processes involved in the execution of the projects Da terra brotam coisas I and II and the Monument to the 4th treated water pipeline of the city of Juiz de Fora, three large-scale sculptures installed in different cities in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It addresses historical, conceptual, theoretical, and practical aspects related to the processes of production and installation of sculptural artistic propositions in public space, problematizing issues related to the public character of an artwork, the urban space, the selection or determination of installation sites, planning, the development of themes or subjects, design, materials, and techniques. The thesis also discusses the stages of production of the three aforementioned projects, examining the contexts and challenges faced by the artists, as well as the solutions adopted. It seeks to demonstrate and understand artistic propositions as a form of research, filling, through theoretical-practical experience, gaps in knowledge related to the execution of large-scale permanent sculptures for public spaces in the contemporary context.
