Interlocuções entre Paulo Freire e serviço social no movimento de reconceituação latino-americano: um destaque para o “método básico” chileno

Abstract

This dissertation aims to promote a critical reflection on the relationship between Social Work and Paulo Freire’s thinking, with an emphasis on the analysis of his theoretical and methodological influence based on the Chilean “Basic Method”. This experience, also systematized in a document, represents one of the main ways through which Freire began to exert significant influence on Brazilian Social Work, especially in the context of the Brazilian Renewal Process. This “method” was one of the inspirations for Brazilian social workers linked to Intention to Rupture to develop, in the early 1970s, the so-called “BH Method”. The qualitative research is based on a bibliographic review focused on Social Work productions that discuss the insertion of Freirean thought in the profession, as well as on the experiences shared between educators and social workers. The work Pedagogy of the Oppressed was presented, in addition to the debate on the “Paulo Freire Method”. The educator’s life and professional trajectory were also investigated. Studies were conducted on the Chilean sociopolitical context between the 1960s and 1970s, in addition to a study on the Latin American Reconceptualization Movement and the Process of Renewal in Brazilian Social Work. The results obtained demonstrate the relevance of Paulo Freire’s influence on the Latin American Reconceptualization Movement of Social Work, especially through the Chilean “Basic Method” and its appropriation in the “BH Method”. Both express theoretical and methodological proposals that reflect the search for a new Social Work.
